This is my keynote from Webcom Montreal, November 2008. The slides are below. I’d love to hear your thoughts. As you can see, I’m pretty passionate about the topic!
Slightly that, yes, but at the same time objectively it *is* pretty dumb. And if people aren’t prepared for that, I think they dismiss it too soon. I know I did:
“26 Mar 07 Smart people are using twitter? Posted by Laura Fitton
Sigh. Last time I looked to see what all the fuss was about I was entranced by TwitterVision in a kind of an overtired/ADD/look at that puzzling trainwreck kind of a way, but that was about it. Now this blogger comes along and claims good uses by smart people for this thing. Hmpf.
Now if I could offer some kind of promotion to whomever Twitted that they were working on their presentation, that I might pay for…”
Same thing happened to me on my first encounter with twitter. Several months later I stumbled upon a blog post that really hit my sweet spot.
Fast forward six months later and I now have two personal accounts, one for English @DavidTaboada, and the other one in Spanish @katalink (my business brand).
I would suggest to anyone trying to convince somebody to get into twitter to warn them about the “dumb and stupid” appearance on the surface, because that is exactly what they will see at first.
Laura Fitton has made a strong and brilliant case for the platform and micro-sharing in general.
Thanks for this video. I have become an avid Twitter user and I am finding it hugely valuable for business use. I post this to an internal SharePoint blog so I can’t link to it but I wanted to let you know that I am sharing it with about 200 people. We have a concept of how we build relationships and Twitter just puts this on steroids. I love how you call Twitter the stupidest application in the world - true - that is why it might become very powerful to the masses. I am now following you and look forward to learning more!
@mkh001
I actually think that the idea of calling it “stupid” or “dumb” makes sense. On the surface it is literally the stupidest application in the world, but the power of it is INSANE.
Wonderful keynote! You not only explain Twitter to non-users in a simple, effective way but you also go beyond the basic into the benefits and appeal of it. And your enthusiasm is contagious.
While it may seem counterintuitive to call Twitter “stupid” or “dumb”, it’s true! Besides, the “for Dummies” series of books wouldn’t be such a phenomenon if the average person didn’t want to be taken by the hand when it comes to learning certain types of information or skills.
Non-techies want to know that they can do something besides surf the net and email. Twitter is one of the simplest ways to share and continues to appeal to users beyond the savvy early adopters.
Thanks!

im new too your world but it was beautiful and simple to understand/thank you jerry
Kind of like the paperclip or the post-it-note. Pretty dumb ideas by themselves…”who the heck needs a paperclip, when I have this big tote-bag of documents? the paperclip…that’s stupid!” or how about…”why do i need post-it-notes when I have this full sized sheet of paper of which I only need an inch to jot down a memo and have scotch tape to affix to my desk….post-it-notes…dumb idea!”
Okay, simplistic yes. dumb, maybe. but enter the first person to apply this “stupid” and yet “dumb” app to make the world take notice. i.e. twitter election results, vice-pres nominee announcements, death in the family, school fire, cable news taking tweets and constructing realtime events, you name your event here _______.
Twitter is the new IM for AOL times 10,000. You hit it out of the park! Kudos! Case in point, this past holiday watching bowl games (american football) had a huge online conversation about the game while watching it. like hanging out with 50,000 fans watching the same thing. distant yet connected.
Like ants in a colony…alone the ant struggles for daily existence…but as part of a colony…it can create an underworld of never ending tunnels to make your head spin.
Laura,
I get its simplicity, but I wonder why you choose to paint Twitter as “stupid” and “dumb.”
Is it to be provocative?
