What can $0 do?

by Laura Fitton on December 19, 2008

We’re campaigning to save kids lives. You can help. @wellwishes is catching on fast, but $25,000 is an audacious goal. We’ll get there with YOUR help. Use this widget (it tweets your pledge and registers you at TipJoy as your Twitter ID & PW) to give us a shot at $10,000 (!) in matching funds from Betaworks and Tipjoy. After the widget, TEN WAYS TO HELP FOR FREE!

Top TEN ways you can help FOR FREE:

  1. Follow @debpuchalla on Twitter. She’s pledged $.25 per new follower from now until Sunday night!
  2. Email your friends (they don’t have to be Twitterati, they can donate directly at TipJoy OR Charity: Water) and tell them about @wellwishes
  3. Post about @wellwishes: blog it, vlog it, comment about it on your favorite blogs or forums, tape a Seesmic or 12seconds or Qik or Utterli,
  4. Put the widget (see below for code) on your site and ask others to, also.
  5. Tweet and retweet about @wellwishes, water quality and how to donate. Tag them #wellwishes
  6. Show friends how to sign up for TipJoy.
  7. Challenge us. “if The @tipjoy total is $_____ by ____, I’ll donate $200″
  8. Tell a blogger. Who do you know who’d love the many angles to this story? I challenge the A-list tech bloggers to cover this first large-scale use of currency to spend and pay on Twitter. That’s a BIG DEAL.
  9. Tell mainstream media contacts. Angles include: Christmas wishes, the clean water issue, holiday charity drives with a web 2.0 twist, how Twitter brings people together.
  10. Leverage: $4,000 total by the end of today today triggers an extra $100 from an anonymous donor. Both $5,000  and $10,000 in @tipjoy donations triggers a $5,000 match from Tipjoy and Betaworks.

Is there a widget that reports on your progress? How much have you raised from x number of folks?

Laura Fitton December 20, 2008 at 9:36 am

Ivan and Abby at Topjoy are building such a widget for us. For now I should add to the post above that people can check the Tipjoy status at http://tipjoy.com/joy/127420/.

At the moment, 196 people have TipJoy’d in $1341.15! :-) That’s the number we’re watching the most closely, because when it reaches $5,000 we get a $5,000 match, and the same at $10,000!

We also get periodic reports from Charity water about the donations made directly there. As of yesterday, that was another $1400 or so from about 36 people.

Great, keep reporting on your progress and showing it – that builds momentum. Also, research shows that positive works better than negative in motivating giving. Report on your status, tell us how many kids are being saved as result, and then let us know how much more is needed to get that first match.

Delighted to do like Deb! Gave to tipjoy, and happy to add 25 cents per new user through Sun the 28th (started with 63 users)! If you like posts about happiness research, follow @senia. Best!
Super work, Laura! Really close to $13,000!
